My dad and I on my Balcony in Medellin

My dad and me on my Balcony in Medellin

I grew up in the sheltered bubble of the liberal college town Eugene, Oregon. At the age of 20 I had my first experience studying abroad in Costa Rica and it opened my eyes to a whole new culture, language and way of life.  Since then I have spent various 6-month stints of study, internships, work and travel throughout most of Latin America, intertwined with summer months of waiter jobs and sports back in the US.  I am currently in the process of completing an International Relations graduate program at the UC-San Diego, and upon graduation will be forced into the real world without the safety net of higher education below me.

I write this blog in a style that combines the only prior writing experience I have; Emails and essays.  I started writing with no real audience in mind and mainly as a social outlet for my solitude. It has touches of a wit-filled email to a friend and an informative paper for a professor.  Probably ends up kind of like a formal paper written to a friend.  Weird, I know. I hope that anyone who reads it laughs at times, or at least smiles, and learns a little about Colombia and my experiences in it.
